Awesome! Managed To Build An Email List=151 Subs

I finally managed to build an email list on the last week of July 2016, to be precise it was on the 23rd of July that my email list went live.

What kind of sucks is that I have to let 90,910 website visitors pass through my site from January to July 22nd before I decided to build an email list:

build an email list to capture the email addresses of website visitors

How Many Email Subscribers I Missed?

How many subscribes could I have got have I created an an email list on Day 1 in January? What could be the size of my email list now, as of August 11th as I’m writing this post?

Well, right now, I have 1,000 visitors visiting my site daily which and I’m getting  on average 7 subscribers per day.

In percentage terms, that’s 0.7% of my visitors that are subscribing.

0.7 x 90, 901=636 email subscribers. That’s what I missed.

That is a very disappointing low number I believe and there’s a lot of room for improvement.

What Email Service Provide I’m Using?

Getresponse. Simple reason being I’ve used them on one of my websites in the past and I sort of know what to do inside their dashboard, setting up autoresponders, newsletters etc so I’m still sticking with familiarity.

Getresponse Email Subscriber List Size & Pricing Fees

Getresponse charges you on the size of your email list.  Right now I’m I’m on the lowest price/plan of $15/month and that is for an email list size of 1,000 subscribers.

As you email list size increases, you’ll pay more monthly.

Right now my email list sits at only 151 subscribers:

I’d like to Get At Least 10% Opt-In Rate

As I’ve mentioned above, with 1,000 plus website visitors a day passing through my website, there’s a lot that needs to be done to increase my email opt-in rates.

The current rate of 0.7% is too low in my opinion.

I got a big job ahead of me.

The Secret To Getting 300 Email Subscribers A Month For Free With Google

Increase email subscribersIn December 2014, I finally decided  to build an email list on one of my sites that receives 5000-6000 visitors a month from free organic traffic mainly from Google.

I later sold this website on flippa for $5000.

I should have started building my email list that 3 years prior when I first built up the site but I didn’t.

As it turned out, it was a very costly mistake.

Over the next 6 months, my email list grew at an average of 300 subscribers a month. This equates to 10 email subscribers per day. The exact step by step process I used will be revealed here.

After 6 months (in July 2015), my email list was 1,800 email subscribers as shown below in my getresponse account and a few days later, I sold my website which also included me  giving away this email list to him with more than 1800 email subscribers:

Email Subscribers In Getresponse

Come to think of it, at that rate, if I had started a year earlier, I would have 3,600 email subscribers in one year.

If I had started building my list 2 years earlier, I would have had about 7,200 or more email subscribers by July 2015.

Why I had to wait almost 3 years to build an email list on a site that gets a steady traffic?

I guess I really didn’t think that  building an email list was that important… until later.

  • One main reason was that I thought creating an email list  was difficult.
  • Secondly, because I had never had an email list before building an email list  “seemed” too technical and I really didn’t know about the ins and out of doing it. The fear of not knowing what to do held me back.

And when I eventually built an email list and started emailing my list, my monthly adsense income started to increase in 2015. I wrote a case study of that here if you are interested in reading: How I Increased My Adsense Income By 184% Using Email Marketing.

So this here are the steps, or the process I went through to get 300 subscribers a month. I was registered to the email service provider getresponse.

These steps are my secrets…

If you cannot decide and commit to building an email list, you will never will.

It’s that simple not only in building an email list but also in what you want to do in life. Its no point thinking about it. Thinking will not build your email list.

As a matter of fact, you’ll always be saying ” One Day, I will build my email list”. For me, that one day came 3 years later because I never decided and committed to building an email list.

The moment when you’ve made up your mind and give yourself a timeline to get all things done, that’s when things really start to happen.

When I saw, in December 2014,  that I am getting thousands of visitors from Free Google Organic Search Traffic come to my website each month and I didn’t have anything in place to capture their email address, I decided I had to either I do it now or never.

Visitors to your site will never give you their email address for nothing…you’ve got to provide an incentive.

That incentive is called a lead magnet.

So what actually is a lead magnet?

A lead magnet is a free offer you make to anyone who visits your website and it can be an ebook, sofware or course that you send out for free only after a visitor chooses to download and gives his email address in exchange for that.

In other words, its an ethical bribe…you give me your email address and I will give you my free ebook.

For my case, I  had two lead magnets:

Lead Magnet 1: I wrote an ebook which I gave away for free and had an opt-in form on the right hand side column of my website (see below):

Ebook As My Lead Magnet

2: My second lead magnet was a free trading software.  This was done one or two months later after the email lead magnet.

Now this one is interesting because, initially, this post below did not have an opt-in form installed on it as I was giving away this software for free (no email subscription required).

As a matter of fact, I did not create this software, it was freely available on hundreds of websites for free.(So there’s an idea for you…sometimes you don’t need to create a lead magnet…just get something already available for free an use that).

One day, when I checked my google analytics data to see what organic keyword people where typing to land on my site. I saw that I was getting hundreds of visitors a month to this post shown below because they were typing the exact keywords because my post was ranking in Google Page 1 between anywhere 2nd and 4th spot.

So that’s when I decided that to have this opt-in form in the post shown below to get email addresses:

Free Software as my lead magnet

So as you can see, your lead magnets can be a software, a course on your website which is made available only to subscribers, or you can create an course and drip feed to your email subscribers over 7 days for example.

Now, say you wan’t to write an ebook but you’ve never written one before. Well, you got two options:

  1. You hire someone to write it for you and that’s going to cost you money.
  2. Or if you don’t want to spend money, you’ve go to do it yourself.

Don’t underestimate the value of a free lead magnet because these people that subscribe don’t really know you yet. And first impressions really do count.

So if you write a free ebook (or any other lead magnet) for giving away to your subscribers make sure:

  1. it solves a particular problem.
  2. it is valuable
  3. it relates to your website’s content you already have
  4. it is appealing…I’m talking about Titles & Subtitles and Ebook Cover. It must look appealing.
  5. it must deliver, which means it leaves a lasting impression on the person who reads it, which means he remembers you, your website and has a greater chance of visiting your website frequently and may be a potential future customer if you sell services and products online.

So that tells you, its important to put a lot of thought and effort to creating your lead magnet. So when the subcriber gets it, it blows his mind.

For my case,  the email service provider I used was getresponse.

Using email service providers like getresponse is something you have no choice but it is a requirement. There’s a monthly cost involved depending on the size of your email list.

The larger the size of your email list, the more you pay monthly as seen here below for getresponse:

Getresponse Pricing Options

Now, if you have not built an email list yet, the your best choice with the “Email” Option which goes for $15/month. That for an email list size of 1,ooo subscribers.

So that’s basically how all email service providers operate on their pricing structure.

So what I did was choose the $15/month option and created an account with getresponse.

I should have thought of this in the very first place 3 years ago: hire someone who knows how to setup up my email list building wheels so it can run.

You see, I can hardly understand computer code and such technical stuff. My mind is not wired for that kind of nerdy stuff.

So I hired someone in freelancer to do all that for me.

What he basically did was these:

  • setup up my getresponse account so that it can start getting subscribers
  • setup up my getresponse opt-in form on my website which links to my getresponse account.
  • got my PDF ebook  and the software and locked it away in my wordpress site so that as soon a someone subscribes, the download link is immediately emailed to them.

The final step for me was to log into getresponse and:

  • familiarize myself with the dashboard of getresponse
  • learn how to create a newsletter (email) in getresponse
  • press send button and email gets sent to all my subscribers

It was that simple!

You know what the hardest part was in all these?  Writing my lead magnet, the ebook, that took a while and a lot of effort on my part.

If I had tried to setup all the email list building system myself, I would have taken a very long time complete it and it would have driving me nuts.

These days, websites like make it all easy for anyone to hire a website designer to someone setting up your email list building quickly.

How quickly?

Well, As quickly as few hours if you’ve got everything on your end all sorted, like lead magnets and opening up an account with getresponse prior to hiring someone.

So all that person would do is set it up for you as he would need your lead magnet(s) and your getresponse login details.

So make your decision, commit and take action.

My Biggest Email List Building Mistake And Here’s My 3 Excuses

Email List Building

I have read of many experienced internet marketers saying that one of the things they should have done in the first place was building an email list.

Here’s what a typical online money making journey of starts like:

  1. When your start a new blog or website and you’ve put the effort into writing some content and finally you sit back and relax and wait for the traffic to come…
  2. You check your google analytics account…nothing! And you check the everyday for the next 2 to 3 months and no visitors.
  3. Then one day, finally, you have your first visitor and you are so excited for this just one visitor. Then the daily visitors gradually increase as time goes on and then you reach your first 100 visitors a month.
  4. And the visitor numbers are increasing because now google is starting to rank you for certain keywords on your pages or posts that you’ve written. Exciting times!
  5. Now you realize that since you are getting some visitors, you need to put some adsense code in your blog to make some money or place some affiliate banners or links on your site.
  6. Soon, you see that you are making some money…not much, anywhere from 2 cents to 20 cents each day in Adsense maybe. But you are excited because that’s money, google is now paying you or you may get some sales as an affiliate.
  7. One year goes by, your website visitor traffic increases but your earnings may not necessarily increase.

And you have not built your email list yet….

Does this story sound familiar? Guess what?

That’s my story…well, not all, but something along that line you’ve just read.

Sometimes as a blog owner, I wonder about those visitors that come to my website, do they ever come back? Or when they leave, they are gone for good, never coming back?

The sad fact is that many visitors that end up on your sites will never come back…EVER!

Now, if you don’t have something enticing to temp them to give their email addresses in exchange, like a free ebook, then they are are most likely gone for good.

I should have built an email list form the very start, ideally, before the very first visitor sets eyes on my blog. I’f I did, my email list could be over 10,000 subscribers by July 2015 before I sold it on Flippa for a sum of money that I was very pleased with.

That was one of the biggest mistakes: never building an email list from the very start.

Now, the fact is, you cannot get everybody’s email address. That ain’t gonna happen. But at least, you should have something on your website that will make your visitors give you their email addressed in exchange for that free ebook, or software or free report etc.

It does not matter even if I had 5 visitors a day during the very early days of my blog, I should have done something about building my email list from the very start.

Oh, well! I got some very convincing excuses below why I did not build an email list in the first place:

  1. the technical details of building an email list with an email service provider like getresponse seemed complicated to me and after reading a few “how to build email list” tips on the net, I threw up my arms in the air and pretty much gave up trying.
  2. I did not have a lead magnet or how can create one
  3. One day, I will build an email list.

You may have other excuses for not building an email list right now. But that excuse may be costing you right now and you may not know it.

For me, I figured, I was  missing out between $200-500 a month of adsense earnings by not building an email list.

Now, you are wondering…how can I use my email list to make money off adsense?

Well, the concept of making money with adsense is really simple: drive more visitors to your website and there’s a likely chance that a certain percentage of these visitors will click the adsense ads on your site.

Now, this strategy of building an email list so that you can use your  list to increase your adsense earnings is  not usually preached around too much from what I’ve seen (I may be wrong).

But from my, personal experience, most times when I email my list, I’ve witnessed very big increase in adsense earnings.

Now, the money I made off adsense may not be life changing but the process I used can be easily copied across any niche.

This was my biggest problem in building an email list. I procrastinated for 2.5 years before eventually building an email list.

During that time, how many thousands of visitors passed through my site and some never to be seen again. I should have got some of their email addresses but I did not. I could have mad a lot more money off my list but I did not, because I had no email list.

Here’s the thing: I wanted to build the email list myself. So I also spend a large part of my time trying to understand how to build an email list myself and I really got to nowhere.

Some people are capable of easily understanding technical concepts lightning fast…not me. Me, I learn by doing and this usually takes a lot of time and when it came to building an email list, I wanted to do it MYSELF!

That was a BIG MISTAKE!

When I eventually gave up trying and hired an expert to setup up my email list for me, it took less than two days!

All the technical stuff like setting up the lead magnet to be sent to the subscriber once they have confirm their opt-in, setting up my getresponse account etc.

I was struggling for 2.5 years and it took this guy just 2 days to set it all up and running.

The very first day, I got 10 subscribers and I was like: “S**t, why didn’t I do this in the very beginning?”

A lead magnet is an “ethical bribe” that you temp your visitors with on your website in exchange for their email address.

A lead magnet can be an ebook, or can be daily course on a subject that gets drip fed to the list, or it can be a free software.

Only when they enter their email address then the information gets sent to their address.

When I eventually to to creating my own lead magnet, which was a 120 page ebook titled “The Ultimate Guide To”_____.

Title Example: The Ultimate Guide To Building Your Email List From 0 To 10,000 Subscribers in a month.

There are so many catchy title ideas you can search online and use.

The lead magnet does not have to be an ebook. It can be a free software. Or it can be a free course that you drip feed daily to your subscribers over a period of 7 days, for example.

You’d be surprised, people will give your their email address for such things.

We all keep putting off things we could have done today for “tomorrow.” When I kept saying to myself “one day I will build an email list”, to me, that “one day” happened 2.5 years later.

Its a total waste of time and time does not wait for anybody.

My problem was lack of focus and commitment. Often I get so many things running through my head screaming for my attention that all my thoughts about building an email list are locked away somewhere in the brain.

Now, my blog was averaging 6000 visitors a month. I was ranking for some of the most expensive cost per click keywords in google in the forex trading niche (not necessarily high search volume).

So, for example, I was getting clicks that paid me $3 to $5. That’s how expensive some of the keywords were with with I was ranking for.

Now, one thing I never did was promote products to my email list. I never did that because much of what gets sold in the forex niche is usually high priced or too much hype about getting rich quick in trading forex  and looks like every body is out to rip off somebody else and that did not settle well with me, personally.

Secondly, I really established my blog as a free resource and If I had to promote something to my list, its got to be something that I’m using myself and I did not  have any except one, which was my own product.

And with this product, which was an ebook I sold for $27, it was a soft sell, not a hard sell.

Here’s how I did it: when somebody subscribed by downloading my free ebook (lead magnet), instead of being taken to the thankyou page telling him to check and verify his email address on his email account, they were taken to a sales page were they this ebook was on sale for.

Even if they buy my ebook or not, they are then taken to the thankyou page and then once they confirm the link sent to their inbox, they are then sent the download link to the free ebook pdf.

All this system was setup up buy the guy I hired to do for me and do you know how must it cost me to pay him to do that? $100

Now my blog actually started to have 5000-6000 visitors during the 2nd year. There was one month were I email posted a lot of content on my blog and every time I did that, I emailed my list. That month, I made over $230 in adsense.

The following month, I only did one post. And my adsense earnings dropped to $119 for that month.

That was a very clear indication that the more visitors you bring to the site, you chances of adsense earnings increasing are great.

  • you are not selling your own stuff so you can get paid more.
  • when these visitors click those adsense ads, they leave your website to go to another website
  • some niche, the amount of money you earn per click is very low so you really need a lot of clicks to make a reasonable amount of money as well as a lot of visitors

You should only promote stuff you use yourself to your list. That’s the best way in my opinion.

What’s the point of promoting something If I don’t have experience using it or know how it works.

So when it comes to your list, respect your list enough to do the right thing with them. You will gain more respect and in the long run you will make a lot more money.
